Andy Beal talks about Google Reputation Management
Posted by: | Comments
When someone tries to trash your company on the Internet, there are some things you can do about it, that is, replace negative webpages about your brand, your company name, or your personal name with webpages and profiles that outrank them and push them off the first page of search engine results. The best time to create positive content is before abuse occurs. Be proactive, do it now. Focus on the quality of content that is relevant to your brand. Acquire a domain, put up a website (if you haven’t already), and link to it from official domains. One sources is a blog on WordPress or other highly ranked blogging site, with the URL yourname.wordpress.com. Google limits you to two webpages from your domain on search results for any given keyword search. Also consider webpages on other websites and social media profiles. You can create a new domain, such as ILoveAndyBeal.com and proactively purchase negative domains with your name in them. The domain name or profile names you use should include your name in them to rank well, as well as in the title tag. Write about yourself in the third person, recommends Beal. Then get people to link to those pages or websites. Since your company owns the “super brand” probably ranked #1 for its own name, a link to your other domains, profiles, and pages passes trust (and PageRank) to these other sites, helping them rank high, as well. Google recently wrote a post encouraging reputation management techniques, since they don’t remove …

Using Google Reader For Seo
Posted by: | CommentsOne of the recent services launched by Google is the Google Reader, which is available at reader.google.com. The Google Reader will allow Internet users to search for relevant RSS feeds and manage them too. As a result, Internet users will be able to benefit from the updated information and current news articles or snippets on various topics of their choice.
In the recent past, we have noticed an increase in the popularity and use of blogs as well as RSS and this increase is going to be there in the near future. One of the primary reasons for the popularity of RSS feeds can be contributed to the availability of updated information in a systemized manner and accessible to almost anyone. For the average Internet user, the launch of the Google Reader is being seen as one giant step. It is a powerful tool that is easy to use.
Using the Google Reader
For first timers, using RSS or downloading and configuring the RSS reader can be quite a cumbersome process especially when you can visit your favorite web site and use their advanced search features to look for new articles or topic specific articles/news. There is another breed of people who wouldn’t even try the task of understanding how a new process like RSS feed will work as they have a pre-conceived notion that it might be complicated. This pre-conceived notion gets most of its strength due to the availability of other options.
The Google reader has been hence created to make the pre-conceived notions disappear and to make searching for the latest news on RSS simple and easy. To use the Google Reader, you need to follow 4 easy/baby steps:
Visit reader.google.com to open Google Reader
Type your topic of interest in the search box
You will get a list of results related to your topic of interest. Find the one you want.
Click “Subscribe”
Did you ever think it could have been so easy? Well! That’s all you have to do to sign up for your favorite feed and the good part is that you can sign up for more than one topic/feed.
What you need to do is click to go back to the Google Reader homepage. On the homepage, you will find a list of feeds displayed on the left-hand side. This is the list that you have subscribed. If you choose any specific feed from the left hand side then you will see all the new posts added on to that particular feed on the right hand side. You don’t even have to search for new or updated feeds!
Hailed as one of the best products from Google, the Google Reader has a high usability and hence will make your life a little more comfortable in a world where knowledge rules supreme; where knowledge is the difference between success and failure.
Is the Google Reader for you?
Since the Google Reader is easy to use and is considered a powerful tool; it will be helpful for anyone and everyone who wants to keep themselves updated on any kind of news from forest fires in the tropical rainforest to Premier league soccer scores. Although the service is meant for every one but the people who will really benefit from it will be the researchers, business professionals, reporters, consultants, analysts etc.
The Features
The Google Reader comes with some value added advanced features, which include:
GMail This: Through this, you will be able to advertise your website or services to others on Gmail. All you need is a Gmail account.
Blog This: This feature will be helpful for those who already have an account on blogger. If you click on “Blog This” then it will open your blog account and you can insert the link on your blog as a reference.

SEO and how to be #1 in Google and MSN!
Posted by: | CommentsCurrent Positions At the time of writing my site ranks
for the term ‘website hacking’ (no quotes needed): MSN: 1st and 2nd Google: 3rd
Introduction The web started out as one big irrelevant
mass of pages, you would have to guess URLs or remember all of
them! Then along came the first search engines, these relied on
manual submissions from webmasters and so developed slowly, then
along came search engine spiders. As soon as these search
engines were “crawling” or “spidering” thousands of pages,
people immediately saw this as an opportunity to help people
boost their search engine rankings. Unfortunately, as I shall
show you throughout the article, not everybody goes about this
business in the right way.
Relevancy The key to a good search engine ranking is
relevancy, is your website relevant to the search terms you are
targeting? Many times clients have wanted to be listed for terms
which have nothing to do with their website. One notable example
was a client who wanted to be #1 ranked for the phrase: “online
clothing” when he was in fact selling deodorants and
antiperspirants. Even if he made his ranking the visitors would
not be interested in his product!
Competition & Keyword Choice The second thing to look out
for is competition, the “keyword modifier” or second keyword can
make all the difference, rather than “games”, try “board games”,
rather than “parties”, try “birthday parties”. Not only will you
get more relevant visitors but you will also find it easier to
get top listings as the competition is not so great.
Link Exchanges Do not go about this the wrong away. As
you can read in a recent article by Mike Banks Valentine
(http://www.seo-news.com/archives/2004/nov/25.html) you can ruin
your chances if you employ bad tactics or do not research your
“friends” thoroughly. I rarely accept people into a link
exchange – they must have a PR or 4 or higher, they must not
employ bad SEO tactics and they must have good original content,
because otherwise my sites could be penalised for the bad work
of others. I also cross-check their name across black-lists to
see if they have already been caught doing something wrong.
Doorway Pages Never ever use doorway pages. I recently
saw a piece of doorway page generation software which was free
and which claimed to be compliant to search engine guidelines.
As the very notion of doorway pages is despised by all search
engines this is impossible. Do not use them as they can only do
harm.
However, as many are sceptical of whether or not this is true, I
ran a recent experiment: I optimized my site for the search
engines using the strategies above and at the same time as
launching this site I launched an identical one on a URL I
cannot publish. I used 1000 doorway pages generated
automatically and pointed them to the main page from the same
domain. With the first domain Google sends me hundreds of
visitors a day, while the second example with the doorway pages
is nowhere in the results, probably banned, for employing “black
hat” SEO techniques.
Conclusion The moral of the day is simple, do not try and
work around the search engines, work with them. Concentrate on
relevancy, keyword choice and link exchanges, as these are the
only ways you can legitimately get a top search engine ranking.
Remember, content is King and relevance is Queen, there is no
point having good content and irrelevant keywords and
vice-versa, only aim for what can be achieved, watch your
competition and be an honest SEO.

SEO – Google Devaluing Sitewide Links
Posted by: | CommentsI was reading through the blog of Matt Cutts, one of the head engineer’s at google and a very adamant blogger. He talks a lot about SEO and changes to Google’s algorithms along with the normal personal blog topics like personal info and video games.
I was doing some SEO research for a new client’s website and I was looking into evidence for the devaluation of sitewide links. A sitewide link is a link on every page of a single website. In the past sidewide links were great for SEO, still are, but they are becoming less effective on Google. Matt particularly comments on google’s devaulaing of sitewide links in a few posts. From my experience, on older sites if you have a large amount of other links, and you get say a link on 50% of pages on another websites Google will count them all as links and this will be a bit more valuable then say a single link, but for a new website, avoid sitewide links on Google. If you go from having a few links to having a bunch of links all from one website it’s appears that Google will completely devalue those links because they appear to have been paid for and one of Google’s current crusades is to cut down the power of paid links.
Currently buying and selling links on the “black market” is one of the major and very important tactics of modern SEO. You build a good site, optimize for the search engines, be creative, try to get as many links as possible and then buy the rest to give you that “push” above the competition. Although Matt talks about how they won’t help you, I believe a lot of this is wishful thinking, or a prediction of the near future. Currently as long as the advertiser doesn’t label your link with a title link “advertisement, sponsor, link partner” etc, the link will still count, especially if they include it in the body of their content with normal anchor text. Of course you’d better be ready to pay a pretty price for that service, because they’ll actually be sending you some of their traffic and promoting your product as opposed to just providing a link for SEO.
One interesting thing to note from Matt Cutts. He rementions the rel=”no” tag. Again for reference this is the tag that you can add to your links to have them not pass on pagerank. Now youre first question may be “why would anyone want to stop a linking from passing pagerank of relevancy”.
There are a bunch of creative answers for that one, but at the basic level this was designed for bloggers who could reduce the power of links contained within blog comments in order to discourage comment spammers. Matt cutts recommends adding rel=”no” to any links you sell. Now if I was going to sell a link to a poker site or a bad neighborhood. This might be a good idea as to not hurt my relevancy in google, but if a website had a similar topic, and was very legitmate, I’ll get a lot more money and they’ll get a lot more benefit from a regular intact link, and if I hide it correctly, google will never be able to tell It was paid for it. Especially if for an additional fee orcourse, I added a page to my blog or to my site describing wha the other website was and why I was linking to them, but that’s all hypothetical.
Right now adsense is my only way to monetize this website and it isn’t paying too well, but then again I just launched this redesign and with some hard work I should be able to dramatically incrase my traffic levels, hopefully enough to earn a nice monthly check from Google.
Summary of two different SEO issues mentioned here:
1. Google devaluing site wide links (links from the same domain or website)
2. Google devaluating paid links

Gervais Group – SEO and Google Caffeine – SEO Advice by Gervais Group LLC
Posted by: | CommentsGervais Group LLC – SEO News and Advice by Gervais Group — Google has lifted the veil, a little bit, on the changes set to take place with the implementation of its update on search technology called “Google Caffeine”. The secret project is the next generation for web search which will mostly affect its indexing processes. Caffeine is likely to change search results to an extent and could ultimately lead toward the holy grail of real time search. In total, it will a more powerful version of what Google offers today emphasizing improvements in “…size, indexing speed, accuracy, comprehensiveness, and other dimensions,” according to Google.
Taking a look at each focus area and anticipating the changes in each is, at best, an imprecise venture but here are some thoughts on where they might be headed with the rollout of Caffeine:
1) Size – Caffeine will allow for their spiders to crawl more of everything; sites, pages on the sites, blogs etc.
2) Indexing speed – With fresh content garnering more importance with search engines everyday and the sheer amount of it that hits the web on a minute-to-minute basis, Caffeine will allow for faster indexing of fresh content to keep results up to date with news, articles, and information. What that means for search engine optimized content is that pages will be picked up and rewarded faster than in the past. While it may not provide immediate gratification, the importance of adding consistently fresh content will be even greater as Caffeine rolls out and indexing gets even faster.
3) Accuracy – The parameters for the relevance of keywords and phrases as they fit into the content on web pages will become much tighter. It’s likely that Google’s interest will go far beyond traffic that goes to a site and will give much more weight to what visitors do when they arrive. Visitors that bounce off of sites quickly will provide indications that keywords are not tightly linked to page content. How quick bounces will be “scored” by Caffeine is likely to remain unknown but they won’t help. More than ever, sites will need to be optimized making sure that keywords and content relate to each other to keep visitors on the pages of the site.
4) Comprehensiveness – Going hand in hand with accuracy, Google will continue to rank sites that do a great job in conveying their authority in the niche they cover. Again, the emphasis is on the consistent addition pages with new keyword-relevant content. Google is likely to stick to its wheelhouse of big websites with tons of information that have been around for awhile.
At the end of the day, the “to do” list that will work for Caffeine is not substantially different than what is working now. If a “best practices” methodology is already in use, an SEO company won’t have to make drastic changes to adapt to Google’s evolution. In setting up their new algorithm, however, Google will force websites to deliver a better user experience which, ultimately, will improve the performance of those sites where their SEO services are paying attention.
