www.empowereddoctor.com Binge drinking, typically associated with college students, may lead to poor decision making. The results of a new study published in the June issue of Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental Research suggest that among college students, those who binge drink often exhibit poor decision making . Jenny Larkins, a graduate student in clinical psychology at the University of Missouri, claims that alcoholics make poor decisions such as those involving short-term rewards coupled with long-term losses. The problems were associated with mental skills such planning for the future, abstract reasoning, inhibiting or delaying responses, doing two things at once and shifting between activities. www.empowereddoctor.com In today’s world, many dangerous chemicals are poured into our foods and into the environment, and our bodies have become a dumping ground for toxic chemicals like acrylamide, sodium nitrate, phytic acid, and hydrogenated oils. Some people have chemicals in their tissues that were never intended for the human body – such as rocket fuel, mercury, lead and others. We know very little about the effects these burdens have on the human body. www.empowereddoctor.com A new study suggest positive effects of chelation therapy. A new study by Ohio State Medical Center suggests a link between mercury and heart disease, traced to the activation of a relatively unknown enzyme, which triggers a process leading to plaque buildup in blood vessel walls. The same study also suggests that both antioxidants and chelation therapy, a treatment that removes metals from the body, may be the key to reducing the arterial injury caused by mercury, and possibly other heavy metals. Empowered Health News | CAM Therapies

Posted by: | Comments (0)

www.empowereddoctor.com Have you been to a practitioner besides your family physician? Whether chiropractic care, acupuncture, yoga or homeopathy, Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) has become increasingly common in the United States, and 72% of adults use some form of CAM therapies according to the US National Centers for Disease Control and US National Center for Health Statistics. A recent cover story in The New York Times Magazine highlighted how chronic pain tends to be under treated because doctors worry about over prescribing medications, and being liable for malpractice or even criminal penalties. Many doctors fear entering the field of pain management at all. Many patients are also concerned about becoming dependant on medication or about the invasiveness and dangers of surgery and anesthesia. CAM therapies, which are able to treat pain and help manage diseases without medication or surgery, are rapidly growing services as people search out better, safer approaches. www.empowereddoctor.com A study from the Peninsula Medical School in Exeter, UK, has found a direct link between levels of physical activity in middle age and physical ability later in life – regardless of body weight. Individuals unable to maintain a certain level of physical activity in middle age were less likely to be able to walk distances, climb stairs, maintain balance, stand from a seated position with arms folded, or sustain their hand grip as they aged. Among men and women aged 50 to 69 years across all weight ranges, physical ability later in life was half that among those who were more physically active. www.empowereddoctor.com A recent issue of the Neurology journal reports that a diet rich in fish, omega-3 oils, fruits and vegetables may lower your risk of dementia. During the study, researchers examined the diets of 8000 men and women over the age of 65 who did not have dementia at the beginning of the study. After four years of follow-up, 183 of the participants developed Alzheimer’s disease and 98 developed another type of dementia. Researchers found that people who regularly ate omega-3 fish oils, found in some cooking oils and certain types of fish, reduced their risk of dementia by 60 percent over the four year follow up period compared to those who did not. People who ate fruits and vegetables daily also reduced their risk of dementia by 30 percent compared to others who did not.
